Did Anyone Really Think City Politicians Love the Earth?

When the plastic bag ban was approved one question was on our minds here at Practical Chicago: What is the angle?

Recently the angle was revealed.  Starting January 1st there will be a tax of seven cents per plastic bag at all local retailers.

Pretty good setup is it not?  Ban the old light weight bags that were supposedly a scourge on the planet.  Let people continue to use heavier “reusable” bags.  Then wait a year and, when nobody reuses the reusable bags, say a tax is necessary because behavior has not changed enough.

It is all just an excuse to siphon more money off the public.  If it would make any difference perhaps you could support such an idea.  But no matter what new revenue streams politicians create financial health here in Illinois never seems to improve.
