Trains Once Ran in the Streets of Wilmette

Many people living on Greeleaf Avenue in Wilmette today likely have no idea trains once ran through the center of the street.

Until 1955 the Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee Railroad used Greenleaf to get from Downtown Wilmette to a connection with the CTA at Linden Avenue.  It used the CTA to reach Downtown Chicago.

The video above contains one and a half minutes of vintage images and footage.

There is not much left to suggest trains once ran here.  But Greenleaf still widens just east of 4th Street to accommodate train traffic, a ghost from a service long gone.
