Crain’s Chicago Business reported this week that Mayor Lori Lightfoot may not run again. Apparently in a New York Times interview she said that COVID, violence and the media may be getting to her.
But as reporter Greg Hinz points out: believing a politician when discussing said politician’s future plans is not a situation where you can expect a straight answer.
There may be pressure beyond what she alluded to in the interview. Crain’s reported in February that some business community members were searching for a candidate to run against the Mayor. Efforts were centered in the real estate and restaurant industries.
We can only hope this turns out to be the case. The Mayor’s tenure in Chicago, centered it often seems around fighting imaginary white supremacy while real problems fester, has been terrible.
