According to bar staff Wrigleyville’s Blarney Stone will close at the end of September. The owner has sold the building, which includes several apartments.
The Blarney Stone has been in operation since 1970. It provides an unpretentious atmosphere that is getting harder to find in Chicago. Touches like the old picture of John F. Kennedy above the bar provide an authentic experience that new operations try to emulate.
While the Blarney Stone still draws a crowd, it is a good guess the owner has made a fortune by selling. Wrigleyville was not gentrified in the 70’s and 80’s. It was the 1988 installation of lights at Wrigley Field that created the trendy neighborhood we have today.
Future plans for the property are unknown.
